Why aren’t young people involved in decision-making processes that affect their lives?
If at the moment, our planet is home to the largest generation of young people in history, then there are 1.8 billion young people who are between 15 and 30 years old. And if according UNICEF, close to 90% of that global youth live in developing countries like Fiji, then shouldn’t your voices be shaping Fijian society and be the main structure on actions taken here? I dont think young people are being heard by decision makers.
Your Power
Less than a decade ago, we know that young people (18 to 35 years) made up almost half of the electorate. That number has since increased and we know that young people hold the balance of power.
Therefore it is not enough to just vote. Are people’s needs and voices and the change they want supported and facilitated? By leaders, by the authorities? What about by the influential, the change makers and movers and shakers of this country? By your representatives, by civil society and by the media?
Our Action
We know there is a gap between young people and the people and places where decisions about them are made. That needs to change. We need to close the gaps that exist between the needs of young people and those who make policy around those needs. Moreover we need to sit at the same tables and create those spaces where younger dynamics thrive. Additionally we can no longer be tokenistic. Let’s make this happen!
